§1 Show respect for other users. If someone does not respect you, ignore them rather than arguing about it and annoying the other players on the server. Whenever possible, avoid profanity and similar language that might turn others against you.
§2 When you play a game for the first time, enter a chat room or become active in the forum, first try to get a feel for the mood of the people. If the atmosphere doesn't suit you, just pick a different spot (forum topic, opponent, chat room, etc.).
§3 Remember that you are not anonymous. Every server is capable of logging your IP (your computer's address). Most servers store every visitor in a file. The IP address points to your Internet provider, who in turn has information about you.
§4 Also keep in mind that a chat or forum is not necessarily private. A lot of the server runs file- or database-based, and all your messages can (but don't have to) be logged...
§5 If you want to say something to someone, it's best to address them directly. Messages that aren't "addressed" to anyone don't necessarily get a reply... but those aimed at someone specific usually do.
§6 When you reply to someone, do so politely, unless there is a good reason not to.
§7 If you have questions, ask them — politely; most people will answer in kind. If the questions are too personal, you'll be told so in a friendly way. Asking is a good way to start a conversation, and most people are happy to help 'newbies' along.
§8 If someone drops in and gets offensive, just ignore them. Getting openly upset only eggs them on. They'll get bored quickly and leave again if the only one they can insult is themselves... If it gets too annoying, you can contact the chat admin via the 'Feedback form' so they can take further steps.
§9 If someone doesn't want to hand over their email address, take it easy. After all, you don't hand your phone number to just anyone either, do you?
§10 Always remember: a chat is like a personal conversation. Behave as you would in a face-to-face conversation.
